The Kerala State Chalachitra Academy hosts the International Film Festival of Kerala on behalf of the Department of Cultural Affairs, Government of Kerala. 

 The 28th edition of the festival (IFFK 2023) featured films from across the world, vying for recognition in eleven distinct categories.

The categories for which the awards are presented include:

  • The Suvarna Chakoram (Golden Crow Pheasant) Award consists of a monetary reward of Rs. 20,00,000 (approx. $ 27,000), a memento, and a certificate.
  • The Rajatha Chakoram (Silver Crow Pheasant) Award, which is given to the best director, contains a monetary reward of Rs. 4,00,000 (approx. $ 5400), a souvenir, and a certificate.
  • The Rajatha Chakoram Best Debut Director Award comes with a monetary reward of Rs. 3,00,000 (approx. $ 4000), as well as a memento and certificate.
  • The monetary reward for Rajata Chakoram Audience Prize is Rs. 2,00,000 (approx. $ 2700).
  • The recipient of the FFSI K.R. Mohanan Endowment Award will receive a cash reward of Rs. 1,00,000 (approx. $1300) and
  • the NETPAC Award for Best Asian Film and Best Malayalam Film, and the FIPRESCI Award for Best Malayalam Debut Director

In 1996, Kozhikode marked the inaugural hosting of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) Coincidentally, the festival coincided with the cinema's centenary celebration, featuring an exhibition of 100 films as part of the festivities.

Initially organized by the Kerala State Film Development Corporation, the festival's reins transitioned to the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy in 1998.

At IFFK 2023, the Japanese film 'Evil Does Not Exist,' portraying the aftermath of industrialization in a village, clinched the prestigious Suvarna Chakoram (Golden Crow Pheasant) for the Best Film. 

Simultaneously, the Uzbekistan film 'Sunday,' directed by Shokir Kholikov, depicting the life of an elderly couple, earned the Rajatha Chakoram for the Best Director.

While the Malayalam films 'Thadavu' and 'Attam' bagged Audience Choice Award and  NETPAC Award for the Best Malayalam Film respectively.

The winners of the 28th International Film Festival of Kerala, which took place from December 8 – 15, 2023 are listed below:

  • IFFK Lifetime Achievement Award – Krzysztof Zanussi (Polish Filmmaker).
  • Suvarna Chakoram for Best Film – Evil Does Not Exist (Director: Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Japan).
  • Rajata Chakoram for Best Director – Shokir Kholikov (Film: Sunday).
  • Rajata Chakoram for Best Debut Director – Fazil Razak (Film: The Sentence/ Thadavu).
  • FIPRESCI award for Best International Film – Prison in the Andes (By Filipe Carmona; Chile).
  • FIPRESCI award for Best Malayalam Film – Aattam (Director: Anand Ekarshi).
  • NETPAC Award for Best Asian Film – Sunday (Director: Shokir Kholikov).
  • NETPAC Award for Best Malayalam Film – B 32 Muthal 44 Vare (Director: Shruthi Sharanyam).
  •  Audience Poll award for Best Asian Film – Thadavu.
  • FFSI K.R. Mohanan award for Best Debut Director from India – Uttam Kamathi for Kherwal. 
  • World Cinema Award – Under the Shadow of the Sun (Director: Shalom Hager).
  • Spirit of Cinema award – Wanuri Kahiu (Kenya).
  • Special Jury Award –
    • Sound Design – All the Silence (Director: Diego Del Rio; Mexico). 

The International Film Festival of Kerala Awards winners of 2023 is an important topic for the upcoming PSC LDC, LGS and degree level exams. So don't forget to memorize it.
